The 8 List: Things I’ve Learned from #PostChat

postchat

I’m finding Twitter to be a invaluable resource in learning about the craft of editing. Whether its engaging fellow editors in tech talk, or sitting back listening to the conversation flow, there is always something to learn from those editors who are active in social media. And now thanks to #PostChat, there is no better way to connect and share your thoughts about post-production editing.

Let’s dig into the archives and find 8 of my favorite tricks and tips I learned from #PostChat! (in no particular order)

If you are not familar, from the #PostChat website:

Postchat is a weekly twitter-based chat, which utilizes the use of the hashtag #PostChat. The chat occurs at 6:00 PM PST (9:00 PM EST) every Wednesday.

For one hour every week, Editors and Post-Production professionals around the world turn their attention towards Twitter and engage in an hour long discussion about the technology and art of post production

Pretty self-explanatory I think? :) Here’s the 8 List…

1. From the August 25, 2011 #PostChat, many editors were posting pics of their keyboard shortcuts. Weston Woodbury collected those images on this site. Great to reference and compare with your own shortcuts!

2. An excellent book recommendation:

@alex4d It was @schnittman who wrote the book on Assistant Editing http://amzn.to/nMKjN1 #postchat

3. Link to the great tutorials on Creative Cow:

@Dr0id Creative Cow Tutorials are, honestly, how I’ve learned a lot of After Effects: http://bit.ly/k0JXcE #VFX #postchat

4. An interesting quote:

@jasondiamond A strong, quality reputation will go a lot farther than fancy gear, blogs or facility. #postchat

5. Sweet Avid MC tip:

@thisisbpm: #PostChat My shortcut/speed tip for #Avid is to map Top and Tail to your keyboard somewhere convenient. Your speed will increase 10 fold.

 6. Great advice for those starting in the biz:

@theriotisover: @BadBoyOfEditing Interning at a small house was key fr me; got more hands-on and more Q&A time with Editors. Recommend fr every1. #PostChat September 1, 2011

7. Networking advice:

@Dr0id: Every freelance job is held by a string. So, I say weave as many strings as you can. Make a web. A net of clients and partners. #PostChat

8. And in case you didn’t know, the editor’s greatest secret revealed :)

@thecrankyeditor: I leave in shots I know the producer hates so that he’ll ignore everything else I’m doing #postchat

Of course, there is much more gold to be found in #PostChat every week. I plan to be there, and I hope you will too! Here’s the last word from my friend Joe Tombarello

@joetombarello: Caught up on #postchat (which was gold tonight), made notes of new stuff, and now I’m going to steal all your jobs
