The time is almost upon us as thousands of film and video professionals descend on Las Vegas for NAB Show 2012. I’m continuing my mini-series of NAB previews. Today I’ll focus on Post|Production World.
The time is almost upon us as thousands of film and video professionals descend on Las Vegas for NAB Show 2012. What’s great (and intimidating) about this conference is that there is so much going on between the education, side conferences, and parties. What does an NAB’er decide to focus on? I’ve picked out a few companies and events to spotlight leading up to the week-long event April 14-19. Today I’ll focus on Avid.

I’m finding Twitter to be a invaluable resource in learning about the craft of editing. Whether its engaging fellow editors in tech talk, or sitting back listening to the conversation flow, there is always something to learn from those editors who are active in social media. And now thanks to #PostChat, there is no better way to connect and share your thoughts about post-production editing.
Let’s dig into the archives and find 8 of my favorite tricks and tips I learned from #PostChat! (in no particular order)

I was packing my lunch for work today, and it got me thinking about what kinds of foods editors like to snack on during those long sessions in the dark room. For me, most days there just isn’t enough time to run out of the shop to grab food. Here’s a list of my favorite editing snacks…

The other day I was sorting boxes in my basement utility closet aka The Place To Throw Crap I Don’t Know Where To Put Until Later. (TPTTCIDKWTPUL) I found an box labelled “Edit 2”. I never transferred any of those trinkets to my current work space. Looking through the box brought back a flood of memories to where I obtained this stuff. Here’s a small sample of what I had found…

Working full-time as an editor for the past 15 years, I like to think I’m pretty smart. Part of surviving so long in the broadcasting industry is quickly adapting to your situation. You must be able to cut with Media Composer for 8 straight hours, then make the jump to using a different editing platform the next day, or in some freelancers case, the same day. That’s not easy to do, but constant learning is key.
I learned a hard lesson the other day about not keeping up with the ‘editing times’. My Waterloo turned out to be iMovie for iPhone. (insert sad trombone here)

In 1996, I was an intern editor at a local cable station in Edmonton called Videotron. I was cutting music videos in a makeshift edit bay in the station’s mobile truck using 2 Betacam SP decks. The cable station’s largest and nicest edit bay housed the post department’s newly acquired Avid Media Composer. As a lowly intern I was told only ‘experienced’ editors may cut on the fancy new Avid. I made it my goal during that internship to not only learn the Avid, but learn it well.
Flash forward 15 years later and I’m shaking hands with the President and CEO of Avid. I’ve come a long way indeed…
